2007 KING COUNTY CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

1. Building public awareness: What priority do you assign to King County's efforts to educate community residents about the importance of historic preservation?

High Priority

Statement: Increased awareness produces increased commitment to preservation.

2. Revitalizing communities: What priority do you give to assuring that King County has the financial resources required to play a significant role in revitalizing historic communities?

High Priority

Statement: I have consistently promoted county funding for preservation and heritage. Last year I chaired the council's 2007 Annual Budget, and included increased funding for barn preservation and heritage organizations. I also secured a commitment from the executive to help fund replacement of human services facities being vacated by Seattle's First United Methodist Church in order to facilitate the preservation of the church's historic downtown sanctuary.

3. Preserving designated City landmarks: What priority do you give to sustaining King County's designated landmarks and saving other landmark-eligible historic places as properties that enable residents to see history and learn from it?

High Priority

Statement: As my record demonstrates, I am very committed to historic preservation. Historic structures provide context and character.

4. Protecting Seattle's heritage in court: What priority do you assign to the work of the County legal system regarding the preservation of designated County landmarks and landmark-eligible properties?

High Priority

Statement: I think that our prosecutor's office should diligently pursue the protection of every legally designated landmark, and that every eligible landmark should be designated.

5. Advocacy for historic homeowners: How do you rate King County's efforts to influence public policy and public perceptions around the benefits of preserving significant historic residences?

Medium Priority

Statement: Much more attention is paid to commercial buildings, but those significant houses remaining in the unincorporated area deserve protection through both regulation and incentives, including direct subsidies and tax breaks.

6. Influencing public policy: What priority do you place on King County's work to foster preservation-friendly policies and funding?

High Priority

Statement: I am sure that much more can be done.

7. Supporting historic preservation: What priority do you assign to sustaining and funding King County's Historic Preservation Program in the Office of Business Relations and Economic Development?

High Priority

Statement: And I did this as chair of the annual budget committee.

8. Funding for preservation projects: What priority do you assign to the provision of grants and revolving loans for King County's private historic preservation projects?

 

High Priority

Statement: None
