In 1914, the Women’s University Club was founded to form a closer union of university women in order to promote outstanding educational, cultural and social activities. Plans for a new clubhouse by A.H. Albertson and Édouard Frère Champney in 1921-1922 included a multi-purpose building with a ballroom-auditorium on the ground floor for easy access.

The Women’s University Club became one of the first of a group of buildings to be nominated and designated as City Landmarks as a direct result of the City’s Downtown Historic Resources Survey and Inventory. Historic Seattle acknowledges the long-term commitment of the Club to retain its 1922 Georgian Revival clubhouse downtown despite the increasing density of office, commercial, and hotel buildings that surround it. The Club leadership has set an excellent example of stewardship, as exemplified by its commitment to ongoing maintenance and improvements to the property. The Club’s gracious acceptance of Landmark nomination and designation in 2008 demonstrates to other property owners that there is value in historic and architecturally important Seattle buildings and they deserve recognition and protection.
The 2010 Exemplary Stewardship award recognized the Women’s University Club for its longstanding commitment to preserving its clubhouse building while responding to the needs of its membership.
