Endangered Buildings

Although Seattle’s Historic Preservation Program offers protection and incentives to designated Landmarks and historic districts, significant historic places are threatened with insensitive alteration and demolition more often than many people would think. Both informal and officially designated historic places are regularly tested against the aesthetic and economic interest of their owners, not to mention the deterioration and damage that can come with age and the forces of nature. While the threat of losing a significant place often galvanizes grassroots preservation efforts and raises the visibility of the resource, immense research and community support is often necessary to transform an endangered building into one that is saved for future generations. For more information about advocating for the preservation of an endangered place, visit our Landmark Protection page or MAin2 Blog. We highlight some current endangered places below.
