First United Methodist Church Issue
Since learning of First United Methodist Church's plans to demolish
its 1907 sanctuary to develop a 33-story office tower, Historic
Seattle has been seeking preservation-friendly alternatives that
provide a win-win solution for the church and those interested
in the building's preservation.
On July 26, 2004, Historic Seattle, the National
Trust for Historic Preservation, the Washington
Trust for Historic Preservation, and Friends
of First United Methodist Church filed a joint appeal of
the City of Seattle's decision to approve the master use permit
for the 33-story office tower planned for the site of the 1907
sanctuary.
While planning for the hearing, we will also be planning a design
charrette to explore economically feasible alternatives to the
proposed tower plan that preserve the church building. The charrette
will take place sometime this fall.
