Lost, Saved & Endangered Buildings

While rehabilitated Landmarks can be seen across Seattle’s many neighborhoods, the need for preservation often becomes most apparent when a beloved historic place is threatened with neglect, insensitive alteration, or demolition.

Since 1974 Historic Seattle has partnered with community stakeholders to ensure the protection of Seattle’s historic places. In many cases Historic Seattle has operated as the developer of last resort, rehabilitating buildings that were once threatened with demolition or thought impossible to save. In other cases Historic Seattle has supported the efforts of grassroots advocates by organizing events, offering technical assistance, and actively engaging property owners, developers, and government agencies in the preservation process.

Buildings—those lost, those saved, and those that are endangered—don’t just tell the stories of those who built and occupied them, they tell the stories of the many people who have maintained and advocated for them. If you know of a historic place that may be threatened, contact Historic Seattle’s Director of Preservation Services, Eugenia Woo, at EugeniaW@historicseattle.org .
