Lost, Saved & Endangered Buildings

Don't wait until the next demolition proposal sign goes up in your neighborhood. Seattle's priceless heritage is at risk and it is relying on neighborhood residents to take action. The best time to act to protect the historic sites you love is right now. Seattle's landmarks ordinance does not require owner consent, so you can research, write, and present a nomination to the Landmarks Preservation Board at any time. If you wait until after you see the demo sign, you won't have enough time to prepare a legally defensible nomination. Seattle's historic sites embody the diversity and complexity of our community's story, as well as variety of threats that endanger those properties. Each site is enormously important to our understanding of who we are as a community. Following is a menu of those we have saved, those still endangered, and those we have lost.
