Advocacy Update

By Christine Palmer

The Advocacy Updates, issued since January 2007, are a way to maintain an awareness of historic preservation issues, concerns, and opportunities throughout Seattle and occasionally and beyond.  Readers act as the extended eyes and ears of Historic Seattle to track land use issues because there are approximately 250,000 buildable parcels within Seattle city limits, many of which contain properties which have historic significance.  As Historic Seattle's Preservation Advocate, I cannot protect all endangered sites alone and need the awareness, sensitivity, and assistance of all community residents who care about protecting the local built environment and the quality of neighborhood streetscapes.  By reading the Advocacy Updates, preservationists learn that they are not alone and can benefit from the experiences of others who are also concerned about the accelerated pace of change in Seattle.  The Advocacy Updates are frequently forwarded, in sections or as a whole, to other interested parties, so the readership is actually greater than my e-mail list.  If you have a something you feel qualifies for a future Advocacy Update, please send it as a Word document to me at christine@historicseattle.org.  And if you have not already, please consider joining Historic Seattle to receive even more information, attend stimulating events, and become more involved with local historic preservation.
