Volunteer Position Openings
There are many ways to be engaged - the challenge is finding the perfect fit with your interests and talents. Historic Seattle is dedicated to matching people with good intentions with the right volunteer opportunity!
Below is a list of the current opportunities for which we are recruiting volunteers.
Northwest Resource Center – immediate need
The primary goal of the new Northwest Resource Center for Preservation is to expand knowledge about historic perseveration and its relevance to a broader audience and to stimulate citizen and organizational involvement in improving stewardship of historic and older properties. Housed in the recently renovated Ground Level of the Dearborn House on First Hill in Seattle, the Resource Center will make available the rich book, photographic, report, periodical and audio collection of Historic Seattle as well as a database referral catalog highlighting the collections of historic preservation themed repositories through the Pacific Northwest.
- Telephone Volunteers -- We currently are in need of volunteers who have day-time availability and are willing to make telephone calls (either from our offices or your home) to historic preservation themed repositories in Washington state to encourage them to complete and return a survey of their resources. Training and guidance will be provided. Time line: the end of January beginning of February 2008
Special Projects – immediate need
- Resource List Coordinator – the Historic Seattle website includes a ‘Resources’ section which lists individuals and companies that specialize in home repair, remodeling, restoration and historic preservation. These include architects, structural engineers, and contractors, as well as those who specialize in plaster, window restoration, masonry, plumbing, electrical and other trades. We are need of a volunteer to update, expand and maintain this list. The volunteer will develop an application form the interested individuals/companies to be place4d on the list, contact existing companies to update and renew their listings, and solicit new companies to participate. This will be an ongoing project, which could require 4 hours a week initially and then a few hours each quarter to review and update the site. No web design experience is necessary. The ideal volunteer is self-motivated, willing to make ‘cold calls’, and has good written and verbal communication skills. The work can be performed from our offices on First Hill or your home.
- Web Resources Coordinator – the Historic Seattle website includes a ‘Resources’ section which includes local, state and national links; books / publications; neighborhood inventories; Advocacy Updates; and Preservation News. We are in need of a volunteer to work with the staff to update this information on a regular basis. The ideal volunteer is self-motivated, willing to spend time online surfing the web, and has attention to detail. Good written and verbal communication skills is a must. The work can be performed from our offices on First Hill or your home.
Advocacy
The Advocacy program utilizes both volunteers and student interns which enables the organization to function with a powerful voice with policy makers, developers, and others who make decisions about the community's historic environment. Check our the numerous ways interns and volunteers are engaged in advocacy issues.
Education
- Tea & Tour (aka Open To View) Docent - The commitment primarily involves serving as a docent at the tour house on the day of the event (usually a Sunday) and/or helping prepare and serve refreshments. If you are fascinated by older residential architecture, enjoying sharing your enthusiasm with others, and would like an insider's view of some of Seattle's most significant homes, consider joining this committee.
- General Support – 3 hours a week (day time availability) to assist with organizing files, making photo copies, assembling program packets, for the Program Director, Larry Kreisman.
- Special Projects – Available to be called upon, often with short notice, for a special project which may include: data entry, telephone calls, stuffing envelopes, or any number of possibilities.
