Young Preservationists Group Inaugural Program
“With our speed mentoring event, we successfully opened the door of Seattle's preservation community a little wider for young individuals full of enthusiasm.”

The Young Preservationist Group held their first event on June 16 th at the Good Shepherd Center. YPG was founded by Katie Kemezis, Ryan Kozie and Michelle Madayag with the purpose of bringing young people together passionate about historic preservation. The group did just that with their Evening of Speed Mentoring. The program was successful in allowing many future preservationists the opportunity to meet with notable Seattle mentors including:
- Kevin Daniels, President/COO of Nitze-Stagen
- Mark Hannum, Landmarks Preservation Board member
- Michael Herschensohn, Historic Seattle Council member and Executive Director of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition
- Christine Howard, Landmarks Preservation Board member
- Erica Kachmarsky, Senior Architectural Historian of ICF Jones & Stokes
- Jennifer Meisner, Executive Director of the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation
- Pete Mills, Historic Seattle Council Member and Community Liason of the Jay Inslee Member of Congress group
- Sean Peterfreund, Landmarks Preservation Board member
- John Schalka, Managing Director of McKee & Schalka
- Scott Shapiro, Managing Director of Eagle Rock Ventures, LLC.
“The YPG Speed Mentoring event really gave me the inspiration and networking tools to go out and take action myself. What I loved most about this event was how passionate all the mentors were about their respective subjects. I truly believe if you show others how much you care about something that they too will become interested in helping the cause. Now that I know about YPG and have the connections, it is my responsibility to get more young people involved with preservation at every level.”
