Preservation in Wallingford

Neighborhoods: Wallingford is ground zero for bungalow-lovers. Paul Dorpat, one of the neighborhood's bungalow aficionados, was one of the founders of the Helix, Seattle's first underground newspaper. He maintains a photograph, film and ephemera repository of unknown size in his Wallingford basement, and is an expert on the neighborhood's history. He will be presenting a "Then and Now" history of the neighborhood this month. More.

What's Happening in National Preservation Politics?

Public Policy: Each year, in the first week of March, preservationists from around the country converge on our nation's capitol. Preservation Lobby Day, sponsored by Preservation Action, a nationwide advocacy group, is designed to raise awareness of preservation concerns among policy makers, to keep or increase funding for existing programs, to support new programs, and to educate members of the preservation community about national issues with local impact. Preservation as a Fourth Career

Voices: Mimi Sheridan, educator, preservationist, planner, and urbanist, talks about how she came to be a preservationist in Seattle, and what she thinks we need, to save the best of Seattle's past. More.

Preserving Tukwila's Grandmother's Hill

Preservation & Environment: A familiar saga involving a "Notice of Proposed Land Use Action" sign had a happy ending in Tukwila this month. After a three-year fundraising effort, the eight-acre property known as Grandmother's Hill in the historic Allentown neighborhood was acquired by the Cascade Land Conservancy for $973,000. The property has been transferred to the Tukwila Parks Department for management as that city's first cultural preserve. How this property was saved from industrial development is a success story about grassroots activism and common ground between land conservation and historic preservation efforts. More.

Saving Saint Joseph's Church

Techniques & Technology: The church at 18th Avenue East and Aloha on Seattle's Capitol Hill was cold, dark and leaky. Nearly seventy-four years old, the house of God and gathering space for the faithful was showing its age. The windows at St. Joseph Parish no longer kept out the rain. Outdated mechanical systems were inefficient and difficult and costly to repair. In response, Fr. Craig Boly, S.J., pastor at St. Joe's and his congregation included a restoration and renovation effort in the church's strategic plan. The intent was to spruce up the church in commemoration of the 100th anniversary in 2007. More.

Strange Bedfellows: Adjacency and Landmark Status

Pending Landmarks: In addition to design review based on a project's individual merits, developments planned next to a City of Seattle landmark must be evaluated by the Landmarks Preservation Board and landmarks staff. The new development planned for the site of First United Methodist Church got mixed reviews at the March 17th meeting... More.
