Preserving the Character of the University District

Neighborhoods: Over the past several years, the University District's complex social and economic issues have been painted in the news media with broad, dark strokes. Though the neighborhood has problems, as do many urban neighborhoods centered around transient student populations, the built fabric and community spirit that underlies the place is more than the silver lining of a dark troubled cloud. What's In It For Me? Preservation Financial Incentives

Public Policy: The preservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings is an important part of a city's visual and cultural landscape and can also be an important component of community development and urban revitalization. Although there are numerous programs that serve historic preservation directly, there are also a wide variety of programs with compatible goals, such as incentives for low-income housing. More.

Get Engaged Gets Younger People Involved

Young Voices: Reuben McKnight, a graduate student studying historic preservation at the University of Washington, came to Historic Seattle a couple of months ago looking for a summer internship. He also wound up with a position on the Seattle Landmarks Board thanks to the Get Engaged Program. More.

When Pioneer Square's neighborhood planning committee got together to consider how it might improve the quality of its historic environment, maintenance was a lynchpin. More.

Every-day House Histories

Some people just want a historic photograph, which are pretty easy to come by in Seattle thanks to a Depression-era comprehensive survey, now housed in Bellevue at the Puget Sound Regional Archives. Some people, however, want to know more. More.

Delridge's Cooper School in West Seattle

Pending Landmarks: Preserving historic schools is a complex issue that has gained increasing recognition over the past few years. The National Trust for Historic Preservation drew attention to this topic in 2001 by making it the theme of National Preservation Week. The Seattle chapter of the American Institute of Architects hosted a forum on historic school preservation in concert with last year's preservation week. More.
