| Preservation in the Capitol Hill Neighborhood |
Neighborhoods: Expansive and diverse, Capitol Hill encompasses a number of smaller neighborhoods with their own identity, and preservation issues. The area bounded on its southeast end by Madison Street, its southwest by Pike Street, its west by I-5, its north by the sinuous Interlaken Park area, and to the east by the Arboretum, contains some of the city's most fantastic examples of residential architecture, many of its historic neighborhood churches, and some of the city's best historic streetscapes. | First Methodist and Preservation Case Law |
Public Policy: The legal issues surrounding Seattle's First United Methodist Church gained national attention after Washington state's Supreme Court ruled, in 1996, that landmarks designation within the City of Seattle impeded the church's First Amendment rights. The case grew from an earlier local precedent at First Covenant Church, located at the corner of Pike Street and Bellevue Street in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The following article, posted in Preservation Seattle with permission of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, first appeared in the Preservation Law Reporter in 1996 and was updated in 2000.

| An Interview with Larry and Lani Johnson |
Voices: Larry and Lani Johnson have been a part of Seattle preservation since the early 1970s. Both were a part of Seattle's early preservation battles, including the effort to save Old Martha Washington School, Ballard's Firestation 18, First Hill's Firestation 25, and the establishment of the Ballard Avenue Landmark District. Lani's early history in Hawaii is an interesting preservation story unto itself, and has added dimension to her approach as a preservationist in Seattle. This interview was conducted in December of 2003.

Preservation & Environment: The frontier, as defined geographically -- west of the Mississippi, and metaphorically -- meaning the cutting edge, new solutions, new technology -- is a fairly complex topic in historic preservation, but one ripe for serious, ongoing consideration. In 2003, it was the theme of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's annual conference, held in Denver, Colorado.

| Preservation at Northwest School |
Techniques & Technology: First Hill's Old Summit School will celebrate its 100 year anniversary next year. Befitting this benchmark, the Northwest School, its steward, which will be 25 years old next year, will embark on a renovation project in 2005 that will allow this wonderful artifact of Seattle's educational past to continue to serve future generations of students.
